I have a different brand gate that I use in a bedroom; I leave it open all day then close it at night to keep the dog in the room with me. It is very easy to open & close and it has a manual locking mechanism that I rarely even bother with; also, it swings open either way. I ordered this one because I liked the black color; I assumed it was similar to my other one. It was easy to install and looks nice but then I noticed that it only opens one way, it automatically closes and locks and it is not easy to open. You have to push a button, grip and slide the handle and lift the gate up slightly at the same time. That's a lot of work when this is in a room where I want to leave it open most of the time (w/o having to prop it). The thing that really bothers me is that there was no mention on the website regarding these features that I find so problematic.

This is a reasonably priced, easy to install gate, which also looks nice. Unfortunately, the opening mechanism is extremely hard to use. We bought (and installed) two and my wife needed two hands just to fight to get either one to open, and I struggled as well. Sometimes it even hurt our hands. If you are carrying something (like a puppy that needs to go outside NOW), the gate is basically impossible to open. The spring-loaded opening mechanism is just too stiff. It's too bad, because otherwise I really liked the design visually and functionally.
