Puppies Behind Bars is a not for profit organization that trains prison inmates to raise service dogs. One program within the Puppies Behind Bars organization is called DogTags. Under the DogTags Program inmates train puppies to become service dogs for soldiers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. During their training:

  • The puppies live in prison with their incarcerated trainers.
  • As the puppies mature into well-loved, well-behaved dogs, their raisers learn what it means to contribute to society, rather than take from it.

Vibram™, the leading provider of military footwear for the most conditions on earth has teamed up with FetchDog™ to create the DogTags Chewy Shoe Dog Toy in honor of the sacrifices made by the military veterans who rely on Vibram™ products and to raise money to fund the DogTags program at Puppies Behind Bars.

With every Dog Tags Chewy Shoe Dog Toy purchase, $1 will be contributed to the DogTags program to train more "service dogs for those who’ve served us."

This dog toy is made of all natural, non-toxic rubber from the same molds used to make the soles of military boots, and we’ve attached a sturdy mountaineering rope lanyard to make playing fetch fun.

  • A rugged performance toy.
  • Made in the USA. 12"L.

That's Good Stuff
Maybe it's not the toy, but the dog?
By Krissy and Sukee from Portland, ME on 04/14/2010
Pros :
Tough for a while
Cons :
Rope Came Apart
Best Uses :
Tug of war

We had hoped to find solace in other people whose dogs had also managed to destroy the rubber sole of this toy... finding none, we will assume that our Springer is either neurotic, determined, or a little bit of both. It did keep her attention long enough to destroy it (several months, I'll add).

Win-Win Toy
By PJ from New Hampshire on 04/09/2010
Pros :
For a good cause, Sturdy, fun

Saw this and figured it would be worth trying, knowing that it would at least be helping a worthy cause. But turns out to be a great indestructible play-toy for our rambunctious pup! He's really tough on toys (which means anything he gets his teeth on), but this one has really held-up. Great for playing tug-of-war or leaving him to gnaw at it on his own. Plus we can leave it outdoors regardless of the weather. Great bang (and good deed) for the buck!

Shoe part is great, rope-not so much
By flo from nyc on 03/15/2010

Our 4 moths old puppy who has razor sharp teeth destroyed the rope instantly. We proceeded to remove the rope, and now she uses the shoe part sometimes. The shoe part is super durable, but not very entertaining.

That's Good Stuff
Slow to warm to
By Mom of two from Massachusetts on 03/02/2010
Pros :
Seems indestructable
Cons :
Dogs weren't interested
Best Uses :
Peanut butter in ridges

The dogs weren't really into this toy until I smeared peanut butter in the ridges. Once they licked that up, they began to play with the toy. It lacks anything "fun" for them, like a squeaker, but at least they can't pull it apart.

Needs That Special Something
Dog Tags Shoe Toy
By Ozzie's Mom from Paradise Ca. on 01/07/2010

Was so happy to purchase this. So that some of the money would be used for such a good cause. Not happy with how fast my little cockapoo was able to chew up the rope. Although I'd buy it again, because it's such a great cause to support.

Tough shoe for a strong dog
By Dora from Houston, TX on 12/27/2009
Pros :
Can't be destroyed
Best Uses :
Good for a strong dog

Our Rotti mix can destroy almost any toy the day she gets it. This is stong enough for her to keep and chew for awhile. Also, $2 goes back to train service dogs. Only drawback is that it's not really designed for her to shake and play tug of war.

May not look like much, but proved itself
By Mom of boys from Niceville, FL on 12/11/2009
Pros :
Durable, fun

This has been the one toy our Italian Mastiff has not been able to destroy. She has had loads of fun throwing the shoe up in the air and catching it.

The puppies Daisy (st.bernard) and Mia (yellow lab) play tug a war. It's durable. They are six months and have not been able to rip it apart.

Great Toy
By Jen from Schaumburg, IL on 11/17/2009
Pros :
Entertaining, Tough

My two boxer lab mixes love playing with this toy. They love to play tug with each other. This toy is great because they have not been able to destroy it.

Great toy for all size dogs
By AM Mom from Port Angeles, WA on 10/08/2009
Pros :
Chew toy and rope, Great cause, Long Lasting, Made in the USA, Safe for teeth

Be sure to remove dog tags before giving to pet. Have given several as gifts and everyone loves them. The rope gives out first but that's part of the fun.
