How to Paper Train Your Puppy

Paper-training is a viable solution for dogs who don’t have a yard. But be sure you really want to train your pup to go on papers because it can be difficult to retrain him to go outside.

Paper-training requires a strict schedule in the beginning, rewards for getting it right, and plenty of patience. You’ll need a ready supply of newspaper or puppy housebreaking pads, which are  made of highly absorbent materials scented with attractants to encourage your puppy to use them.

Choose a room with a floor that is easily cleaned, such as linoleum or tile. Put a layer of plastic down and cover it with newspaper thick enough to absorb about half a cup of liquid. In the beginning, spread the paper over a large area and reduce it as the puppy learns to pick a spot.

Take your puppy to the papers when he wakes up, after eating and after vigorous play. Praise him lavishly when he poops or pees and immediately remove him from the area.  If he doesn’t want to go on the papers, confine him to the area by erecting a gate. Keep checking on him because you want to praise him as soon as he produces.

If you see him sniffing and circling in another room, pick him up and take him to paper immediately. Give him a command like "Hurry up" and then praise him when he goes.

Leave at least one soiled sheet of newspaper each time you clean up. The scent will let your puppy know this is the spot for going to the bathroom.

If he has an accident in another room, clean it immediately with a cleaner that removes stain and odor so he isn’t tempted to revisit the spot. Never punish your puppy for your lack of vigilance.  He will not understand your anger and actions like pushing his face in or near his feces will only make him afraid of you. If the puppy continues to have accidents, you aren’t paying enough attention to the paper-training process.

Paper-training should never be used as an excuse for leaving your pet home alone for long periods of time. Paper-training is meant to make life easier so you can spend more time having fun together.
