Every dog needs a bath now and then. Since many dogs dislike baths, it’s a good idea to teach your puppy to enjoy them while he is small …and still easy to lift into the tub or kitchen sink. Have a few old towels ready and expect to get wet, yourself!
Don’t worry about actually cleaning him during the first few sessions. (How dirty can a puppy be?) Instead, focus on making the experience fun. First, lift him into the tub or sink and offer him a treat as you talk to him in a soft, happy voice. If he is calm, massage him gently – as if you were working in shampoo – in one of his favorite spots. Don’t add any soap or water this time; just create a positive association with the place.
For puppy’s next bathing session, put a small amount of water in the sink before you lift him into it. Again, talk to him gently. Don’t be surprised if he struggles when his paws touch the water; keep talking until he settles down and reward him with a treat. When he calms down, gently massage him (still without any shampoo). Have a soft towel ready to dry him off when you are done.
Gradually introduce the sound of running water, and, if you have a long-haired dog, the sound of the hair dryer to these "practice" sessions before you try a real bath.
