This test is given at 49 days of age. Common elements include tests of:
• Social attraction, in which the tester coaxes the puppy toward her. Does the puppy come eagerly, eventually, or not at all? This is considered a measure of sociability and dependence.
• Following, in which the tester walks away. Does the puppy follow eagerly, hesitantly, or not at all? This is considered a measure of dependence versus independence.
• Restraint, in which the tester gently rolls the puppy on its back and holds it there. Does the puppy fight it, eventually relax, or give up immediately? This is considered a measure of dominance versus submissiveness.
• Social dominance, in which the tester strokes the standing puppy on the back. Does the puppy protest, lick the tester, try to escape, or roll over? This is considered a measure of dominance versus submissiveness.
• Elevation dominance, in which the tester lifts the pup slightly off the ground and holds it there. Does the puppy struggle fiercely, accept it, try to lick, or freeze? This is considered a measure of acceptance of dominance when it has no control.
• Retrieving, in which the tester tosses a crumpled up piece of paper. Does the pup fetch it, grab it and run away, or just look?
• Sound sensitivity, in which the tester makes a sharp noise a few feet from the puppy. Does the puppy bark at it, look at it, or cringe?
• Touch sensitivity, in which the tester presses the webbing between the toes. How long does it take the puppy to protest?
• Sight sensitivity, in which a towel on a string is jerked around near the puppy. Does the puppy give chase, just look, or run away?
