Remember, dogs of all ages experience the world with their tongues and teeth, and this overwhelming oral curiosity is strongest in puppyhood. In order to sweep your home of potential hazards to your pup, it helps to see the place from his perspective – literally.
So get down on all fours and crawl around your place looking for things that might cause him to get into trouble: electrical cords… a carved wood chair-leg… an under-sink cabinet that contains household chemicals. It’s easy to put a lock on the under-sink cabinet, but how to prevent puppy from chewing at the furniture and wires?
Simple: spray those items with Bitter Yuk, a proven canine taste deterrent. This stuff is, as its name suggests, bitter to the taste. Spray it on something and you have an excellent chance that Fido Junior won’t want to go exploring that thing with his mouth. Dogs don’t like the smell or taste of citrus either, so in a pinch, try orange essential oil from the health food store – it’s a good thing to keep on hand anyway – or squeeze the oil from a fresh orange or lemon rind directly on to the wood and wiring.
