Call it a Dog Hotel, a Dog Spa, or Doggy Daycare with Sleepover, if you need a boarding kennel you want one that is safe, clean, comfortable, and a satisfactory home away from home.

Finding the right kennel is much like finding the right veterinarian: Ask trusted friends and relatives or vets and groomers for recommendations. The best boarding facilities book months in advance, especially for holidays. So find the best kennel before you need it.

When you visit, bring your dog so you both can get a sense of the place. Ask if they offer grooming, play time, walks, and treats. Check out where the dogs will sleep, walk, and play, and look for signs of cleanliness, organization, and happy dogs. Ask about anything that bothers you, such as other dogs that seem aggressive, areas that don’t seem secure, or a lack of grass and too much concrete.

Ask if they can they accommodate your dog’s special needs, such as a particular diet, eye drops, shots, or other medication. Can you bring your dog’s favorite bed, treats, and toys? What requirements do they have? Many boarding kennels insist upon proof of vaccinations and may require other verification that your dog is in good health.

Ask about pick-up and drop-off times. Some kennels have set times to fetch your dog and will charge you extra if you are late. Ask about the cancellation policy in case your plans change. And finally, if you like the looks of the place, make your reservation. You will miss your pooch when the time comes, but at least you will know she’s in a good, secure, comfortable place.
