Waiting for the adoption agency bus from Tennessee on a bitter cold night, Kristen and her family didn’t know what to expect. They had only seen a picture of Shea on the internet. Kristen had fallen in love with her sweet, fuzzy yellow face and her sad story. She had been abused by a backyard breeder and at 2 years old, had already given birth to two litters of puppies.
An hour later, a very terrified Shea was driving home with them and everyone in the family was arguing over whose bed she would sleep on. Now, three years later, the kids have to be begged to walk her, but Kristen and Shea are inseparable. Shea sleeps by Kristen’s easel and never lets her out of sight. "It’s a very grounding relationship," says Kristen, "and when I look in her eyes I think who saved who?"
