Finding the right veterinarian for your new dog is a priority. Plan to take your dog in for a check-up soon after you bring her home.

Trusted friends and relatives often are the best bet to find a vet. Ask how long they’ve used their vet and under what circumstances. For routine care? For emergency care? For older and chronically sick animals? Your dog may be with you for years, so try to find a vet for the long haul.

Determine what range of services a vet offers, and at what price. Are the hours and location convenient for you? Is emergency care available if your dog falls ill in the middle of the night or a holiday?

Pay attention when you take your dog in for her first visit. Is the office organized and well-maintained? Are the exam rooms and equipment? Do you like the way the staff interacts with your dog? Do they take the time to answer your questions, or do you feel rushed? Overall, you and your dog want to feel at ease with the overall atmosphere of the practice.
