Unleashed enthusiasm

The days of sitting, staying, rolling over and playing dead are behind us. Now that warm weather is here to stay, it's time to get out and walk - or run.

As the "mom" of two dogs, I used to get tied in knots when I tried to walk them together. Then I discovered the Knot a Long double dog leash and coupler. Crafted from climbing rope, this sturdy yet soft combo allows two dogs to roam freely - even dogs of varying sizes - without tangling themselves or their owner.

Stella, our Belgian Malinois, is quite a puller, even when she's the only dog on the leash. So I was thrilled to find Gentle Leader's Easy Walk dog harness and leash set. Unlike traditional harnesses, this one tightens across the chest and shoulders when your dog tries to take you for a walk. Problem solved.

Speaking of harnesses, the Web Master dog harness from RuffWear is perfect for outdoor adventurers who like to take their dog along for a hike or climb. It fits like a dream and the fleece-lined belly straps mean canine comfort. The coolest part? It has a handle on top so you can give your dog a boost over particularly difficult terrain - or, after a grueling hike, help him into the car.

Though we're not planning to climb any mountains this summer, my dogs do love a good run. But with leash laws - and traffic concerns - I can't always let them loose. The Roamer Hands Free Leash makes up for it. This leash attaches to a belt, so when you run, your dogs can, too - hands-free.

Every summer, I like to get a pretty new leash and dog collar set for each of my dogs, and this year, I've found a few great contenders. My favorite is the humorous Canine Obsessions line, embellished with squirrel and bird patterns. The fashionista in me loves the Vineyard Collar and Leash, which bear a striking resemblance to my favorite Orla Kiely bag. I'm also a little bit wild about the chi-chi leather and brass Park Avenue collar and leash set. Very upscale - but don't our dogs deserve the best?

With all these options, we'll be good to go - no matter where we go - this summer.
