Take Your Dog to Work Day

Sometimes, it may seem like your office is going to the dogs. But today, it really will be. FetchDog and Bring Pets Home are co-sponsoring Pet Sitters International Take Your Dog To Work Day.

I work in a fairly formal environment, but from time to time, I bring Cassidy to the office. She's a big, sweet Golden Retriever mix, and her personality really lends itself to the workplace. Stella, our Belgian Malinois, is another story altogether. She'd spend the whole day herding my colleagues if she could.

When you choose to bring your dog to the office, you need to keep the comfort of your dog and your co-workers in mind. If your dog is too busy, like Stella, she'll distract everyone. The right temperament - and the right accessories - are crucial. Below is my list of must-haves for the 9-to-5 canine crowd. For more information, visit www.takeyourdog.com.

Dog bed: After the initial excitement of meeting and greeting, Cassidy makes a beeline to my office, curls up and takes a little snooze, which is why I decided to pick up a special bed to leave at the office. FetchDog's new Eco To Go Dog Pad is a cozy, environmentally friendly option that's perfectly portable.

Dog bowls: While you're hanging around the water cooler trading office gossip, your dog may be wishing she had a little water of her own. The excitement of meeting new people and visiting a new place is bound to leave your dog thirsty and hungry, (then again, Cassidy is thirsty and hungry all the time). The Bamboo Dog Feeders are a stylish, office-friendly option.

Collar and leash: Even the most obedient of dogs get a little wound up in a new environment, and in your workplace, there are plenty of offices, closets, elevators, stairwells and cubicles to explore. A collar and leash will ensure that your dog stays by your side all day, even if one of your officemates brings a leftover T-bone for lunch. We're wild about the artist-designed Rising Tide Collar and matching leash.

Dog crate: Until your puppy is fully housetrained, a crate is an excellent idea. Puppies are both curious and friendly, and if you bring yours to work, you may spend less of your day on task and more of your day chasing him around - or cleaning up his messes. By bringing a Portable Dog Crate to work, you'll be doing yourself, your colleagues and your puppy a favor.

Dog gate: Cassidy is the perfect office dog with one exception - she likes to roam around, making friends and snouting people in inappropriate places. While your office may be fully dog-friendly, it's common courtesy to keep your pooch in your office - and out of everyone else's business. A Freestanding Dog Gate will help dog-proof your workplace, even if you work in a cubicle.

Dog treats: Coming to the office is a big deal, but it's clear that Cassidy is up to the task. Times like these call for a special treat, such as Whole Life All Natural Freeze Dried Dog Treats. If I keep rewarding her good behavior, every day can be Take Your Dog To Work Day.
