Smooches & Nuzzles

We'll bet that describes what you AND your dog would like to receive on February 14th - and with just the right treat, Valentine's Day can be a celebration for you both. The aptly-named Smooches and Nuzzles are artisanal dog biscuits that happen to be hand-cut into heart shapes: Perfect for the most romantic of holidays - or any time of year that calls for an out-loud expression of unconditional love. You know a gourmet dog treat meets the toughest palatability test when your discerning taster sees you holding one and sits before you even ask her to. But I demand much more from my dog treats: They must be human-food-grade, contain absolutely nothing artificial, AND they must look good on my kitchen shelf. (Yeah, yeah, I have a background in fashion - so sue me.) That's not the only reason style is important to me. When you live in an apartment with six dogs and little cabinet space, and you keep large quantities of treats within easy reach on restaurant-style open shelves, packaging that's easy on the eyes becomes a priority because, well, it's part of your interior decor. Miraculously, Smooches and Nuzzles meet and exceed all of my criteria. They contain no by-products, added salt or sugar, chemical preservatives, artificial colors or flavors. Nor are they contaminated with any of the common allergens - like beet pulp, rice, wheat, corn, or soy - that can cause hair loss, itchy skin and paws, or chronic ear problems in susceptible dogs (like my hyper-sensitive dog Pepper, whose only permissible between-meals bite is Nuzzles). Not only do all members of my pack willingly sit when they see me reaching for Smooches and Nuzzles - even the snotty seniors who've been spoiled into believing they have treats coming to them for free - but the treat containers look ready for their closeup in Elle Decor, thanks to handsome labels with clean, colorful, modern graphics. Actually, if you've been slaving over a hot computer all day and neglected to pick up munchies for yourself, I'm here to report that Nuzzles - elegantly flavored with duck and cherries like some mouthwatering recipe out of Food & Wine magazine - make a fine snack (especially when paired with GrĂ¼ner Veltliner). You wouldn't want to do this every day (it would diminish your dog's supply, after all) but you could, risk-free: delicious Smooches and Nuzzles are made in an FDA-approved facility in Southern California that also produces food for humans. Bon appetit!
