Sheep Thrills

I admit it: when my husband and I adopted a purebred Belgian Malinois from the local shelter, we hadn't exactly done our homework.

A few months earlier, we asked the shelter to call us if a large-breed puppy showed up. Well, the whole litter did — and their parents, too. When we saw Stella, we were so smitten with her pokey little snout and her ink-black eyes that we never stopped to ask what it is that Belgians actually do.

It didn't take us long to figure out that they herd. Obsessively. It's in their DNA, and while they prefer sheep, tennis balls will do. Stella also enjoys herding shoes, small children and party guests. Sometimes this goes over well. Sometimes it doesn't.

Barnyard Buddies Plush Dog ToyLiving with an unemployed work dog is a bit of a challenge. For a while, we considered loaning her out to a nearby farmer. We even entertained the idea of getting our own sheep. But somehow, we didn't think that would fly, living so close to downtown. Until now, tennis balls have been the "flock" of choice, but now that I've seen the Barnyard Buddies plush dog toys, things are about to change.

These plush dog toys are adorable and durable. They're lined with Chew Guard (I wish my couch was!) and the squeakers are even reinforced. The best part is, they look like miniature pigs, cows and sheep, so you could have a barnyard blitz it you wanted to.

As for Stella and me, we're sticking to sheep.
