Shedding Solutions

Sometimes, our house feels like a fur factory.

When it was just Cassidy, our long-haired Golden Retriever mix, our dog problems were bad enough. But when Stella, a short-haired Belgian Malinois, joined the family, things went from hairy to scary. Between the two of them, they put off enough fur every two days to make an entirely new dog.

Thank dog we discovered the FURminator, which is every bit as good as it claims to be. Though it looks like a regular rake, don't let its appearance fool you. The FURminator works wonders on short-haired dogs, reducing shedding by up to 90 percent. Add FURminator's waterless shampoo and conditioner, and things will be even cleaner.

Even the FURminator can't eliminate the other 10 percent of Stella's shedding (not to mention Cassidy's 100 percent). Which is why FetchDog's dog couch covers and bed scarves are so important.

Sure, we could just cover everything with blankets and call it good. But we didn't spend years searching for perfect furniture only to cover it up with a ratty old castoff. And despite our best efforts, the girls aren't about to stop hopping up on the couch or the bed anytime soon.

For the living room, we're wild about the Double Dog Furfighter - an attractive, reversible throw that's quilted on one side and faux shearling on the other. We also love the Crypton Fabric Couch Cover, which fights stains, bacteria, odors and moisture. It looks like regular fabric, but mud and spills wipe right off - even after repeated washings.

In the bedroom, nothing beats a Quilted Bed Scarf. Not only are the earth tones gorgeous, the soft microfiber throw repels moisture. It's OK for us to drool in bed, but the dogs? Not so much. And the idea of sleeping without inhaling a nose full of dog hair seals the deal.

We can't stop our dogs from shedding, but we can keep it under control. And with these products, our house might look less like a fur factory and more like a home.
