Seeing Dog Eyes

She could've been a show dog.

That's the running joke in our house about Stella, our little stunner of a Belgian Malinois. She's a beauty queen, to be sure. And she struts across our area rug like it's the green carpet at Westminster. But we're quite sure her desire to herd the judges and all of the other dogs would disqualify her from Best in Show consideration.

If her obsessive herding didn't, her eye injury would. A few years back, Stella was tearing through the woods of rural Maine like a cheetah when a whip-thin branch slashed her inner eyelid. The pain was tremendous, and the bleeding was enough to make even the toughest of dog owners feel faint.

We rushed her to the veterinarian, fearing that she would lose the sight in one eye. And when the vet tech walked into the waiting room with a solemn expression on her face, we braced ourselves for the worst.

"Will she go blind?" we asked.

The vet tech shook her head and turned to us, sadly. "I'm so sorry," she said. "But Stella will never be a show dog again."

My husband and I turned to each other burst out laughing, relieved that our sweet dog wouldn't lose her eyesight, and amused that anyone thought Stella could've been a contender.

I wish we had known about Doggles back then. They look like sunglasses for dogs (think Snoopy in his Red Baron days), and their shatterproof, UV-blocking lenses protect your dog's eyes from way more than a wayward branch. They would've saved Stella from a lot of eye aches, and us from a lot of headaches.

Even better? They'll give your dog street cred - they're used by military, police and other working dogs worldwide.

So Stella will never be a show dog. We're over it. But with a set of Doggles, she could moonlight at our local airport. We're willing to bet she'd herd up any criminals, drug runners or other unsavory characters in no time flat.
