Resolution Solutions

By Kristen Lainsbury

Big surprise: Your New Year's resolution for 2010 is to exercise more, eat less and finally get in shape.

It's the same resolution you've made since you were old enough to care about fitness and, frankly, your track record isn't so hot. Sure, you start out with good intentions, but you know what they say...

Any health magazine will tell you that exercising with a friend will help you stick to a routine. This year, why not try exercising with man's (or woman's) best friend? You'll be doing both of you a favor. In fact, your dog may love you even more than she does now, if that's possible.

Before you get started, however, you'll need a few key supplies. If your dog is a puller, like my Belgian Malinois, Stella, consider investing in a dog harness, which will keep the pressure off her neck. FetchDog.com has stylish and practical options for dogs of all ages and sizes.

Why not start off the new year with a new collar and leash? Like a new pair of running shoes or yoga pants, this might just jump start your exercise routine. Plus, you'll find leashes tailored to whichever workout you choose. Are you a trail runner? Try the Roamer. Prefer cycling? The Walky Dog Bike Leash is a must. Have two dogs? Double the fun (without getting tangled) with the Knot-A-Long Double Dog Leash Coupler.

If you can only go running or walking at night, you need to make sure you and your dog are visible to cars and pedestrians. The ReflectaBones Dog Leash and Collar is an attractive alternative to traditional reflective gear. Speaking of which, you can't go wrong with the Rufflective Vest Dog Coat, a blaze orange and fluorescent yellow getup that will make your dog stand out in the crowd. On a dark and foggy night, nothing beats The Beacon Dog Safety Light, a strobe that can be seen from up to a half-mile away. Clip it on to your dog's collar or coat, and you'll be good to go.

Once you have all the right gear, you and your dog will have no excuse not to go the extra mile - or five. Here's to keeping your New Year's resolutions. And taking your best friend along with you.
