Product review: Anti-Bloat, No-Skid Dog Bowl

By Kristen Lainsbury

We should've named Cassidy, our 14-year-old Golden Retriever mix, Hoover. She inhales her food so quickly she gives herself dry heaves. It's disgusting, but worse than that, it looks terribly uncomfortable.

Still, I was a little skeptical when I was asked to try the Anti-Bloat, No-Skid Dog Bowl. This bowl with "posts" designed to slow down eating (I call them speed bumps) seemed too good to be true. The bowl is constructed of sturdy, slip-resistant plastic -  weighing in at 2 pounds, it's almost as heavy as her ceramic bowl. And since I feed our dogs in the kitchen, I was pleased that the cool gray color looked great with our stainless appliances.

For the record, Cassidy doesn't seem to get bloated after she eats, but the bowl is supposed to alleviate bloating (a.k.a. GVD) and extra gas.

My main concern was speed. On average, Cassidy eats three cups of food in 5 1/2 minutes out of her regular bowl. The Anti-Bloat, No-Skid Dog Bowl upped that average to 8 1/2 minutes. The most interesting part of the experiment, however, was her reaction to the actual bowl.

At first, she looked flummoxed, and she grabbed a mouthful of kibble and spread it out on the floor in front of her. I thought the whole thing was doomed. But after her second bite, she was intrigued. She snouted around a little, then delicately picked up her food in small bites. My husband maintains that she's annoyed, but I don't think that's the case.

If anything, she seemed to actually savor her meal rather than suck it down like a vacuum cleaner. And for Cassidy, that's quite an accomplishment.
