Don't let the dog beds bite

Long ago, when I was a kid, our Sheltie, Dandy (no, I didn't name him), slept on an old piece of shag carpet left over from the construction of our new house.  It was about 3/4 of an inch thick, and its color would have been a perfect match for the lustrous harvest gold of my grandmother's Kenmore appliances.  Given his limited ability to perceive color, Dandy didn't mind.  He considered himself lucky to have something, anything, between him and the floor.  Back then, dog beds were few and far between.

Somewhere over the course of the past twenty-five years, the dog bed landscape has changed.  Dramatically.  Now, it's a reasonable bet that dog beds have surpassed people beds in terms of variety.  And variety is good.  As long as you choose carefully.

At FetchDog, we test a log of dog beds.  Hundreds.  While all of them are an improvement on Dandy's dubious remnant, some are clearly better than others.  And of the good ones, we o nly give the nod to the absolute best.  Just for fun, I thought I'd give an unsolicited list of my favorites.

Buddy BedThe first standout is the Buddy Bed.  It may look unassuming, but it's the most advanced dog bed you'll find.  Lined with two inches of the world's highest grade memory foam and a three inch layer Cozy Caveof supporting foam, it eliminates pressure points, providng much-needed support for aging joints.  Trust me.  I've tried it.

A clever cross between a bed and a lean-to, the Cozy Cave's ingenious design features a soft, fleece-lined pocket to form a soft, fleece-lined den.  Dogs burrow in, spin around, and lavish in its warm, secure embrace for hours of peaceful R&R.  People should have it so good.

Crossing the line between bed and sleeping bag, the Tiger Dreamz Luxury Nest Trundle appeals to the same canine instincts as the Cozy Cave.  Made of soft faux fur, it

absorbs tired dogs until they emerge, well-rested, to pursue their ambitious canine agendas.  it also makes for great photographs.

None of our beds are more aptly named than the West Paw Eco-Friendly Napper.  Made entirely of recycled plastic bottles, it's lined with IntllifoftTM and covered with plush fleece in lively colors and patterns.  It'sWest Paw Dog Bed a low-profile bed, so climbing on is easy - and it won't lose its loft.  If you're inclined to have more than one dog bed around the house, this is a great choice - and it's great for travel, too.

Outdoor Futon Dog BedThe Outdoor Futon dog bed rounds out my top five.  Dogs love to be outside.  They like to nap.  So it's only logical to give them an outdoor dog bed that satisfies both passions at once.  And with weather-resistant fabrics in patterns that are downright elegant, it's as easy on your eyes as it is on the dog.

There you have it: my FetchDog favorites.  But don't take my word for it.  Trust our canine testers.  They've tried them all - and each bed has passed with flying colors.  And we're just scratching the surface.  Take a closer look at our entire dog beds section.  But don't be disappointed.  Dandy's carpet didn't make the cut.
