Bodhi's Great Escape

Recently, my 7 year old Bichon Frise, Bodhi, managed to find a loose picket in my friend Lucinda's fenced in yard.  In the blink of an eye, my dog was gone.

I started searching the neighborhood.  Previous escapes (always short-lived) had taught me that what works best is driving around the block in my car with the windows rolled down, calling "Bodhi, let's get some cheese!" (Her favorite treat.)

After 15 minutes, low level panic set in.  I decided to go home and call some neighbors and animal control to let them know that she was loose.  When I went to pick up the phone, I noticed that I had messages.  One was from a woman one street over who said that she had my dog Bodhi.  The other was from Home Again (the microchip company) telling me that someone had called in to say they had my wayward pooch.  The woman who had Bodhi was kind enough to call both Home Again and my phone number on the little metal tag that I had bought at the pet store when I first got my dog.  Not only did Home Again call me, they also called my mom, who was the back-up person on my original Home Again contact list.  This leads me to mention how important it is to regularly update your contact info with Home Again.  Having my now 85 year old mother as backup was no longer a good idea.

There is something else that I have found out about placing chips in our pets.  If someone brings in a pet to a vet and the vet has not previously seen the animal, they will most likely do a scan to see if there is a chip and to make sure that the person who brought the animal in is the person listed as the owner.  This gives me great peace of mind, knowing that if a pet is stolen, there is still a chance that it could be reunited with its owner, thanks to microchipping.

I have gotten so much more than my money's worth from Home Again.  Microchipping is easy and inexpensive.  And, I'm happy to say, Bodhi is home and safe.
