Barking up the wrong tree

By Kristen Lainsbury

There's nothing so relaxing as a spring afternoon spent lounging in the hammock, sipping lemonade, reading a book, maybe stealing a nap.

Unfortunately, at our house, the tranquility is usually short-lived. Why? Because our neighbors leave their dogs outside all day long, and they bark every time they see anything move. Who could blame them? I'd bark, too, if someone left me penned up in the backyard.

However, I've found a few perfect solutions at FetchDog.com - which the neighbors may find on their doorstep in an anonymous package...

For starters, I might just walk over there when nobody's home (and by the sound of it, nobody's ever home) and hang up the adorable PetSafe Bark Control Ultra-Sonic Bird House. It looks like a chickadee chalet, but it emits a high-pitched sound that keeps barking at bay. The noise is imperceptible to most human ears, but dogs get the message.

Another option - one that I would leave on the front stoop, since there's no way I'm getting near those dogs - is the Scentless Spray Bark Collar or the Citronella Bark Reducing Dog Training Collar. These are brilliant - when your dog barks, a puff of nontoxic spray is released from the collar. It totally distracts the dog, and in doing so, conditions him to think that maybe barking isn't such a great idea.

They're highly effective. Which is clearly not the case with whatever is going on a few doors down. I'm ready to get our weekends back, and these dog problem-solvers are just the thing to keep things relaxed - and quiet - all day long.
