Veterinarian and FetchDog friend Dr. Diane Levitan has a new pet project: Helping PAW (Promote Animal Welfare), which operates a mobile veterinary clinic. Helping PAW's mission is to bring low-cost spay and neuter services for dogs and cats to pet owners on New York's Long Island who would otherwise not be able to afford to have their animals fixed.

The van, a 40-foot Toy Hauler RV, is fully loaded with state-of-the-art veterinary equipment, and the spay-neuter services offered exceed the care guidelines for such programs as laid out by the Association of Shelter Veterinarians.

At the unveiling of the clinic-on-wheels, Nassau County Legislator Edward P. Mangano spoke about the importance of proper animal care and control. In the coming weeks, the Helping PAW mobile clinic will operate four days a week, making scheduled stops to offer its services at pet care centers throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties.

"Animal overpopulation is a crisis-level issue," Dr. Levitan said. "Our primary goal is to raise awareness of the need to spay/neuter to decrease the number of unwanted pets. It's a vital aspect of caring for your pet. We want to make spay/neuter accessible to more of our neighbors who may find these services beyond their means in today's tough economy."
