Surviving house fire, New York City dog makes miraculous recovery

By Julia Szabo

After three months of medical care and TLC, a sweet pit bull named Sara is finally up for adoption. The gentle, young dog suffered burns all over her body in March, when she was found by a New York City police offer in the aftermath of a Queens house fire. Despite the pain of her injuries, the gentle dog patiently allowed the officer to handle her; he drove her to the city shelter, NYC Animal Care & Control (NYCACC).

Responding to a call from NYCACC, North Shore Animal League America arranged to transport the dog to its Alex Lewyt Veterinary Hospital on Long Island. Once there, Sara (as she was named) received emergency care and medication before being transferred to a specialized care center for burn treatment. Sara underwent several surgeries and procedures, and was also treated for pneumonia, which was the result of smoke inhalation.

Now 90 percent healed, Sara is back at North Shore and ready to find a permanent home. North Shore hopes to reunite the canine burn victim with her original owner, who was taken to a hospital burn unit. Sadly, the shelter's attempts to locate Sara's owner have been unsuccessful so far.
