Starting today, ASPCA offers free spay/neuter surgeries to pit bulls and pit mixes

By Julia Szabo

Today, the ASPCA launches "Operation Pit," a new program offering free spay/neuter surgeries to all healthy pit bulls and pit mixes between the ages of three months and six years, along with free vaccinations and micro-chipping. Five surgeries will be performed every Thursday.

Also on offer, for the first time, are vasectomy surgeries, described as "a more discreet sterilization option" in which the dog's testicles remain intact for the sake of owners who prefer this look.

"Operation Pit" came about as a solution to the heartbreaking numbers of pit bulls found in animal shelters across the country, especially urban municipal shelters. "Pit bulls and pit bull mixes make up a vast percentage of homeless dogs found in city shelters," says Dr. Louise Murray of the ASPCA, which spayed/neutered more than 31,000 dogs and cats in New York City last year.

To schedule an appointment, call the ASPCA's Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital at 877-900-PITS (7487).
