Spay-neuter clinic will fix dogs for free this Sunday in New York City

By Julia Szabo

The excellent non-profit United Action for Animals believes - rightly - that the most effective way to combat pet overpopulation is sterilizing instead of euthanizing to prevent thousands of unwanted companion animals from being born into a world without enough homes to adopt them. The group offers its first spay-neuter clinic this Sunday, January 17, as a life-saving service to families that are unable to afford the sterilization surgery.

UAA will provide free MASH-style surgeries on the third Sunday of each month in various venues around New York City. The locations will be in "hot spots," i.e. areas where most stray and relinquished animals statistically come from. The immediate goal is to sterilize 75-150 dogs and cats each time; by 2012, UAA plans to open full-time, permanent clinics offering high volume, high quality spay-neuter procedures. This Sunday's first free spay-neuter clinic will be held at the Phipps Classic Center, 286 East 156th Street in the Bronx; to schedule an appointment, call 212-249-9178.
