"Save a Stray for the Holidays," historic dog adoption event, takes over 14 Los Angeles animal shelters

By Julia Szabo

This Saturday, December 19th, the excellent non-profit Found Animals Foundation will host the second annual "Save a Stray for the Holidays" adoption event in Los Angeles. For the first time, the city-wide event will take place simultaneously at 14 City and County animal care center locations.

The goal of "Save a Stray for the Holidays" is to spread awareness of the millions of wonderful animals available for adoption from the municipal shelter system, where only 50 percent of impounded pets make it out alive simply for lack of available cage space to hold them. Minimal awareness of shelter locations has also contributed to these facilities being consistently overcrowded and underfunded.

Now, thanks to this city-wide event, there are no obstacles standing between Angelenos and their dream dogs. Resistance is futile, so if you live in the Los Angeles area and you're in the market for a wonderful family pet to pamper with dog toys and treats  - or you're looking to collar a second dog to add to your pack - you don't have to go further than your local animal shelter to find one.

"The public can make a difference - by adopting their next pet from an animal shelter and making sure to spay and neuter," says Aimee Gilbreath of Found Animals, who adopted her beloved pit bull, Rufus, from a municipal shelter. "We think the public will be shocked to learn that nearly four million dogs and cats are dying every year in U.S. animal shelters. Through this event we hope to educate L.A. residents and demonstrate by example that it pays to adopt from your local municipal shelter. By choosing to adopt, you save the life of the animal you take home, the one that now has space at the shelter, and the one that was never bred."
