Rachael Ray makes generous donation to shelter for homeless dogs

Emmy Award-winning TV host Rachael Ray has awarded a donation of $50,000 to a New York animal charity. Angel's Gate Hospice in upstate Delhi, New York, was chosen through public vote to receive the cash donation in the show's first annual "Mutt Madness Awards Program." The windfall came from proceeds of Ray's Nutrish pet food, which is manufactured by Dad's Pet Care.

Angel's Gate Hospice was founded in 1993 to provide sanctuary for special needs animals. Currently, the 100-acre facility is home to nearly 400 animals. The management had noticed that donations had recently dwindled, so the award came in the nick of time. "Our donations are down and people are struggling in this economy," said Angel's Gate founder Susan Marino. "Mutt Madness was a great opportunity for charities like ours to get some much needed funds and a fun way for people to help without having to dig into their pockets. God bless Rachael Ray for doing this."

Putting the prize money to work, Angel's Gate laid the foundation for "Rachael's Kitchen," a new addition to the facility where the resident animals will be fed and cared for by staff and volunteers. It's scheduled to be unveiled in early 2010.

The runner-up in the "Mutt Madness" contest is Last Chance Ranch of Quakertown, Pennsylvania, which received $25,000. "I was shocked to find out we had made it to the finals," said Lori McCutcheon, the second-place charity's founder and president. "You enter so many contests just hoping for some extra cash to stay open, but I don't think you ever imagine this happening. It's wonderful. No matter which charity came out on top, we all win, because the animals win. And that's what it's all about."
