Oprah and Sadie

Making good on the promise she made her viewers last April, that her very next dog would be adopted from an animal shelter, Oprah Winfrey has welcomed home Sadie, a comely Cocker Spaniel puppy with whom Winfrey says she "felt an instant connection."

A ringer for the fetching female in "Lady and the Tramp", the pretty petite pup is already getting a taste of what it's like to be the best friend of a world-famous celebrity.  Sweet little Sadie appears on the cover of O magazine's June issue, which hits newsstands Monday, along with four other pups from PAWS Chicago, the windy city's largest no-kill shelter.  Also in the picture are two charismatic mixed-breed mutts whose sweet expressions almost steal thunder from Sadie, who assumes pride of place on Winfrey's right shoulder.

Five days after bringing Sadie home, Winfrey also adopted Sadie's brother Ivan.  But just a couple of weeks after the cover shoot, both Ivan and Sadie were hospitalized with parvovirus, a viral infection that is often fatal to puppies.  Sadly, Ivan did not survive, and Winfrey tells his story in her "What I Know for Sure" column.

"I'd been through parvo 13 years before, with my brown cocker, Solomon," Winfrey writes.  "It nearly killed him.  He stayed in the hospital for 20 days.  He was over a year old when he got it.  Ivan was only 11 weeks.  His young immune system wasn't strong enough to overcome it.  Four days after we took Ivan to the emergency clinic, he died."

Happily, all of the other dogs wiggling on and around Winfrey in her magazine's charming cover photogrpah (taken by Pamela Hanson) have been adopted and remain healthy.
