On new web site, dog cartoons appear to draw themselves - and color themselves in

By Julia Szabo

Want your dog to achieve fame and immortality just like the New Yorker cartoon dogs, or the real-life furry friends of Fetchdog's own Glenn Close?  It's quite simple: Submit a funny story about Spot and something s/he recently did, and if you're lucky, Draw the Dog will cartoonify your best friend.

The brainchild of Bruce Kasanoff and former Disney artist Jim George, this excellent site posts a new cartoon every weekday. Thanks to clever animation, each black-and-white cartoon appears to draw itself before the viewer's enchanted eyes. What's more, almost all the drawings on the site are inspired by a real dog, and each dog gets the credit s/he deserves.

When someone suggested featuring a color cartoon on the weekend, Draw the Dog was happy to oblige with breed-specific 'toons that not only draw themselves, they color themselves in. Thus far, the breeds featured have included the Great Dane and Greyhound.

Since launching in September, the site has received "many hundreds of stories, and Jim has drawn about 60 cartoons," Bruce says. "People have stopped by from 55 countries, and we are having a lot of fun." Pay them a visit, and you will too.
