Ohio legislator proposes ban on pit bulls

The sad plight of the pit bull  might get even sadder if one Ohio legislator gets his way.

The web site of the Animal Law Coalition reports that Ohio State Rep. Tyrone Yates proposed a bill yesterday, H.B. 568, that would prohibit the ownership of pit bulls in the state of Ohio.

The bill requires all owners to surrender their pit bulls within 90 days of the effective date of the proposed law. The bill states that the dog warden would euthanize all pit bulls within 10 days of their surrender.

The proposal also states that a dog warden or other officer may apply for a search warrant if he has probable cause to believe that a dog is a pit bull. With the search warrant, the officer would have the authority to seize the dog and surrender the animal to the dog warden to be killed.

Under current Ohio law, a vicious dog is defined to include pit bulls regardless of their temperament or behavior, but there is no statewide prohibition on owning and keeping pit bulls. The Ohio Supreme Court has upheld this law.
Currently, it is illegal to own a pit bull in Denver. In other states, Arkansas among them, shelters are not allowed to adopt out pit bulls, no matter their age or the gentleness of their temperament.

Seriously, how are they going to tell if a dog is always a pitbull? Is this going to include mixes with pitbull? Just because they think a dog is a pitbull they have the right to take it from it's owner and kill it? That has got to be one of the dumbest things I've heard in a long time.
