North Shore Animal League America's adoption event finds homes for about 40 animals

At Friday's big adoption event staged by North Shore Animal League America, some 40 animals found forever homes in under six hours.

It's compelling proof that star power helps fuel successful shelter adoptions. That's because the big draw at the event - besides the adorable animals, of course - was actor Richard Belzer, who gamely hosted the proceedings in full Uncle Sam costume, touting the slogan "We want YOU - to adopt!"

For still more proof of stars' power to help re-home homeless pets, look forward to the tenth annual Broadway Barks adoptathon on July 12 in Shubert Alley, the epicenter of the New York theater scene. Co-hosted by actresses Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters, this fun event is now in its tenth year and has re-homed about 300 pets. And this year, one of the featured talents will be FetchDog's favorite actress, Glenn Close.

The message of Broadway Barks - that shelter pets are the real stars, just waiting to be cast in the role of best friend and family pet - is reaching an even wider audience thanks to Peters' charming new children's book titled (what else?) Broadway Barks.
