New York dog lovers prevail in protest against breed-specific legislation

By Julia Szabo

Local Law 9, breed-specific legislation discriminating against pit bulls and Rottweilers in Rockville Centre, Long Island, was enacted last month, but overturned Tuesday when the village's Board of Trustees voted unanimously to repeal it.

On Tuesday evening, approximately 500 dog lovers convened at Anderson Recreation Center to address Rockville Centre's Board of Trustees and peacefully protest the breed ban. Among the group's leaders were City Pitties, Rescue Ink, and Bobbi & The Strays

Compelling testimony was provided by City Pitties founder Jennifer DeFrank, who introduced two certified service dogs named Wrinkles and Cinnamon, both "pitties," to drive home the crowd's consensus: "Local Law 9 is inhumane, illegal, and disrespectful to Americans with disabilities and to an American icon - the pit bull terrier."
