In Lehighton, Pennsylvania, in the Pocono Mountains, an accidental propane explosion killed 17 dogs at a kennel called Pazzazz Pet Boarding that breeds and trains show dogs.  Fifteen dogs were killed in the blast, and two more died later.Martha Stewart with Paw Paw

One of the dogs that perished was FetchDog friend Martha Stewart's Chow Chow puppy, Genghis Khan.

The kennel was receiving a delivery of propane when the tank ignited, setting fire to the dog pens and injuring the driver, Timothy Kleinhagen.  Although badly burned and now hospitalized in critical condition, Kleinhagen still managed to toss a Cairn Terrier over the kennel fence to safety.  "The man is a hero," said Karen Tracy, the kennel's co-owner.

Genghis Khan was a grandson of Stewart's previous Chow Chow, Paw Paw, who died last April at age 12; Paw Paw had made many appearances on Stewart's TV show, in her magazine, and right here on FetchDog.  FetchDog's deepest condolences go out to Stewart, Tracy, and to everyone, canine and human, injured or touched by this terrible accident.
