Making News: A Boy and His Dog

By Julia Szabo

That's the ironic title of a fetching flick released in 1975 that co-stars a young Don Johnson as Vic and a shaggy mutt named Tiger as Blood (Jason Robards also stars). Based on "Vic and Blood," a raunchy sci-fi story by Harlan Ellison, the R-rated cult movie is definitely not family-friendly fare.

In it, the sex-driven "boy" takes direction from his four-footed - but hardly fuzzy - friend, who communicates with him telepathically (we get to hear the dog "talk"). Incidentally, the dog would later go on to play the Brady Bunch family pet.

The movie was recently restored, and a new 35 mm print will unspool at midnight tonight and tomorrow at the River Oaks Theatre in Houston, Texas.

Writer-producer-director L.Q. Jones is also an actor who's appeared (under his real name, Justus E. McQueen) in some 116 movies, including Raoul Walsh's 1955 Battle Cry. Like many mutts, Jones a.k.a. McQueen is a multi-talented hyphenate, and he's currently at work on a new project, the details of which he prefers not to disclose.

He told Lana Berkowitz of The Houston Chronicle that not everyone likes "A Boy and His Dog," "But whether you like it or not, it's going to stick with you." He added that one needs to see it three times not to miss anything, and gave great-performance props to Tiger the dog.

We can vouch for the film's worthiness - which is why we included "A Boy and His Dog" in the FetchDog Top 20. Why not add it to your Netflix queue?
