BSL - the acronym for Breed Specific Legislation - threatens to outlaw certain breeds of dog, specifically the Pit Bull and its purebred cousins, the American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

But lovers of this controversial canine stand behind their favorite dog with a loyalty to match that of the famously loyal Pit Bull.  Here's proof:  Next Thursday, July 23rd is the date of a "peaceful demonstration of protest and enlightenment," as its organizers describe the event, in New York City's Washington Square Park.

BSL has been in effect in Denver, Colorado for many years and recently took effect in several other states, including Arkansas.  The New York Housing Authority enacted a BSL ordinance last month, banning many different breeds from public housing, including the Pit Bull.

Demonstrators plan to meet next Thursday at 6 pm at the North entrance to the park, assembling in front of its famous arch.  The catalyst for this event is a dog named Bruce, a friendly Staffordshire Bull Terrior rescued by a family in Northern Ireland, then taken from them and kept caged in isolation for the past two years while he awaits execution, per the terms of that country's Dangerous Dogs Act.  The evening will end with a candle lighting and moment of silence to "Bring Bruce Home."
