Louisiana shelter dogs travel North in search of new homes

By Julia Szabo

As reported here, animal shelters in Louisiana are working overtime to cope with the collateral damage from the Gulf Coast oil spill. More and more out-of-work people can no longer afford to keep their pets, so area shelters and pounds are filled beyond capacity with adoptable dogs.

To help make cage space available at these overcrowded facilities, the Humane Society of the United States and the Louisiana SPCA coordinated a transport of 94 dogs from nine Louisiana shelters and rescue groups to St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in Madison, New Jersey.

The dogs all arrived safely on Friday; the majority of them will be available for adoption at St. Huberts, and the balance will be placed with partnering agencies across New Jersey. If you're in the Northeast and looking to open your home to one of these orphans of the oil spill, go here for information.

In an effort to help financially affected families keep their pets, the HSUS also coordinated the donation of 12 tons of dog and cat food to several Louisiana shelters.
