Keeping dogs safe at Halloween time

Scary things can happen to dogs who are left unattended at Halloween time, so please take extra precautions for Spot's safety in the days leading up to the big night, and especially on fright night itself, October 31st.

Please don't leave dogs (or cats) unattended in your yard while you're out, as this leaves them vulnerable to mischief-makers and people with cruel intentions.

Is your dog joining you on your trick-or-treat route? Then be sure he has an ID tag, and he's attached by a leash to a responsible adult, and keep him in sight at all times. A reflective dog leash and collar will heighten Spot's visibility at night, and if it's chilly out, a reflective dog vest in seasonally-perfect orange doubles as a fun but functional costume, so the dog won't feel under-dressed for the occasion.

If you're staying home and anticipate opening the door frequently to trick-or-treaters, be sure that Spot can't sneak outside and get lost. Often, pets - especially shy, skittish ones - can be seriously spooked by strangers showing up at the door wearing scary costumes, and some try to escape by bolting out the door. Keep the dog on a leash by your side, or better yet, close him in a different part of the house with a tasty howl-iday treat to chew on. That way, you know he'll be safe from harm - and having fun at the same time.
