June is Adopt-A-Cat Month, says American Humane

Posted on Jun 30, 2008 By Julia Szabo
June has been designated Adopt-A-Cat Month by the Colorado-based American Humane Association.  Dog owners who entertain fantasies of having a peaceable kingdom at home, where canines and felines coexist happily ever after, are sure to hightail it to their local animal shelter to give a homeless cat a home.

Of course, June is all but over - but the crisis of homeless cats in this country is such that every month could easily be declared Adopt-A-Cat Month: literally millions of healthy, affectionate cats are killed for lack of available homes, so animal shelters hope that adopters will consider welcoming home cats year-round.

The great news is that it's not impossible for dogs and cats to tolerate each other - and even, in some cases, to become the best of friends, like Earl and Mooch of "Mutts" cartoon strip fame. The peaceable-kingdom fantasy can become reality, as long as dog lovers take a few precautions.

Luckily, Dena Jill Fitzgerald, Director of Animal Welfare Services for American Humane offers some excellent advice on when and how to introduce dogs and cats - and when not to.
