In the opera world, a superannuary is an extra who doesn't talk or sing. And although some dogs can sing - or try to - Fetchdog Friend Jack the Maltese isn't one of them. For Jack, silence is golden, because his job is to remain quiet during the few minutes he enjoys onstage at The Metropolitan Opera, no matter what sort of commotion is happening around him.

Having previously demonstrated his amazingly good behavior in Met productions of "War and Peace" and "Manon Lescaut"' Jack now takes on Richard Strauss's masterpiece, "Der Rosenkavalier" (the cavalier of the rose).

About half an hour into Act I, Jack is walked onstage and presented to none other than internationally acclaimed diva Renee Fleming. As La Fleming's character, The Marschallin, sits at her dressing table, she's shown the fluffy little white dog and pets him; then Jack is escorted back offstage, where he gets to recline on a dog bed until ovation time.

Opening night was Tuesday, and as usual, Jack hit his mark. There's still time to see the tiniest opera star, who is represented by the prestigious pet talent agency All Tame Animals; the production's final performance is January 13.
