Hungry dogs get a helpful handout for the holidays

Across the country, the economic downturn is impacting many dogs whose families are having trouble making ends meet.  Sadly, many Americans who cannot afford pet food are surrendering dogs to animal shelters or abandoning them by the roadside.

In New York City, the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, which operates The Picasso Veterinary Fund, one of FetchDog's favorite dog charities, has a plan to keep New York's animals and their people together.  The Alliance has announced a partnership with the Animal Relief Fund (ARF), New York City's first not-for-profit organization dedicated to distributing donated pet food to local food banks.

Founded a year ago by lawyer Susan Kaufman, proud owner of a Boston Terrier named Rex, ARF has fed hundreds of four-footed New Yorkers in need, with assistance from two New York State food banks, Long Island Cares and Food Bank for New York City.

With the holidays fast approaching, the Mayor's Alliance is asking New Yorkers to celebrate the season of giving by making a donation to ARF.  "We want to raise awareness within the community about the hardships faced by many New York City pet owners and their struggle to provide food and care for their cherished family pets," Kaufman says.
