Gulf Coast animal shelters report rise in abandoned dogs

By Julia Szabo

Animal shelters in Louisiana are working overtime to cope with collateral damage from the Gulf Coast oil spill. With so many jobs lost, more and more people can no longer afford to keep their pets, so area shelters and pounds are overflowing with adoptable dogs.

If you are in the market for a new family member, animal advocates - including FetchDog friend MuttShack Animal Rescue Foundation - ask you to please consider searching Petfinder or Adopt-a-Pet, and investigating options for rescuing and transporting a sweet dog out of Louisiana.

A few excellent groups to contact include Animal Rescue New Orleans, Lafayette Animal Aid, and Animal Aid for Vermilion Parish.
