Giving thanks for healthy dogs at holiday meal time

By Julia Szabo

When it comes to enjoying the Thanksgiving meal, or the many helpings of leftovers it provides, please don't forget your dog - but please don't overindulge him, either. There are healthy and unhealthy ways to let Spot partake of the holiday feast, so please play it safe.

The safest, of course, is to give your dog high-protein, jerky-style dog treats made just for dogs, so Spot can feel part of the celebration without feeling sick to his stomach later on.

For those who just can't let the holiday go by without giving the dog a taste of turkey and trimmings, a few safety pointers are in order. While intrepid human diners can wolf down five or six cups of food during one Thanksgiving meal, a medium-size dog thrives on just two or three cups of food per day. So, if you're saving Spot some choice scraps from your plate, please cut back his regular kibble to make up the difference, so he won't pack on pounds.

Speaking of scraps, make sure to give only bits of lean meat and plain veggies - hold the gravy, stuffing, salt, and sugar. Small pieces of baked sweet potato or yam make a fine dog treat; marshmallows do not. Also, remember not to give Spot pan drippings or turkey skin - these dangerously high-fat items can land your dog in the hospital with a painful case of pancreatitis.
