This Sunday, May 3rd, marks the 18th anniversary of the DogsWalk Against Cancer in New York City's Riverside Park. This non-competitive walk-a-thon and festival features fun contests and raffle prizes, and raises money for the programs of the American Cancer Society (ACS) and its partner, the Donaldson-Atwood Cancer Clinic at the Animal Medical Center (AMC) in New York City.

"This is a great way for dogs - and their owners - to spend the day in a beautiful natural setting, with other dog lovers, walking for a great cause," said ACS's Maureen Fitzgerald. "Last year we raised more than $180,000 and more than 2,000 dogs and humans joined in the fun to raise money for the American Cancer Society's research, education, advocacy and local patient service programs." Registration is $50 and includes a contest entry, raffle entry, and doggy bag full of goodies; register here.

The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering, and preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service. As veterinarians and doctors team up to fight cancer through partnerships such as the one between ACS and AMC, people as well as dogs benefit, with the ultimate goal being the concept of  "one medicine" that heals humans and animals alike.

Need more incentive to participate? Chilling statistics show that 50 percent of dogs over age 10 will get cancer; one in four dogs dies of cancer; and cancer is the number one cause of death in dogs over age two.

Meanwhile, on May 17th in New Jersey, the Bark Fest 2009 will benefit the homeless dogs awaiting adoption in St. Hubert's animal shelters. Adults and children are invited to walk their dogs through the scenic private grounds of the Upton Pyne Estate. In addition to refreshments, music, games, and fun activities for kids, a highlight of the event will be a reunion of Satos, Puerto Rican street dogs that were lucky enough to rescued and rehomed by St. Hubert's, which also operates an excellent therapy-dog program. For more information, go here. Pre-registration is $15 per adult and $5 per dog; children under 12 are admitted free.

Both events will take place rain or shine.
