A wedding for dog lovers

Comments(1) Now is the time for all June brides to be nailing down their wedding plans, if they haven't already - and for wedding invitees to finalize what to give the happy couple, if they haven't already.

Here's the ultimate solution for dog lovers looking to do something creative: make a donation to your favorite animal-welfare organization, whether it's your local shelter or a national animal-advocacy group. This way, your wedding gifts and wedding favors can be as wonderfully unique as a shelter mutt!

When in doubt, a bride can't go wrong by asking herself, What would Martha do? We do mean wedding expert extraordinaire Martha Stewart, who's a great supporter of the ASPCA. And it so happens that, on its web site, America's oldest humane organization suggests that wedding guests make a donation in lieu of buying an item from the couple's registry, and that couples make a donation in lieu of purchasing wedding favors: "In exchange for your thoughtfulness, we will provide you with place cards to notify your guests of your gracious gesture."

Couples can also get a page on the ASPCA's web site to show off photo albums and exchange ideas with visitors signing a guest book. One terrific idea is to have a dog do duty as ring-bearer. (For tips on how to prep a dog for his big moment, a pet project in itself, go here.)

Keeping homeless animals in mind on the happy day is a great gift that raises awareness among your guests of shelter animals needing homes. And creative ways of raising awareness are precisely what's needed right now, to help stem the overwhelming tide of healthy animals killed at shelters all over this country just for lack of adopters and cage space.

Of course, if you really want to splurge, you can always sweeten the wedding-favor deal with adorable little dog-shaped chocolates by Teuscher, in dark, milk, or white.

I did this a way back when. It went over well, but I certainly wish the placards looked at nice as these do.
