FetchDog does it freestyle

There are garden-variety games of fetch, and then there are fetch championships. Watch a rescued dog from Rochester, Minnesota, win the tenth annual Purina Incredible Dog Challenge, to be broadcast this coming Sunday at 5 p.m. EST on ABC, and Monday at 2 p.m. EST on ESPN2.

The finals were taped on September 29th, the historic day when Wallace the Pit Bull and his handler Andrew "Roo" Yori ended by scoring 87 points in the freestyle flying disc competition to the tune of Rawkfist by Thousand Foot Krutch. "It was one of the closest competitions they've ever had," Roo reports. "The dogs in second and third place tied at 86.5."

Three years ago, Roo's original intention was to foster Wallace temporarily until he found the dog another home. "A couple of months after we got him out of the local animal shelter, a friend started a disc dog club," he recalls. "I took my other dog and Wallace was just sitting there; we'd planned to do weight-pulling with him. But then I figured, he likes to play fetch, his energy and drive are ridiculous, so why not give him a shot?"

Wallace was an immediate natural. "He started doing all kinds of tricks within a couple of days," Roo recalls. "At that point, my wife and I were still thinking about finding a new home for Wallace. Then we realized he was pretty happy, and we had a great opportunity to showcase the breed and do some really good things. That's when we figured maybe he should just stick around forever."

The "foster failure" recently collaborated with Hero Disc USA to create a limited-edition Wallace disc; through sales and online auctions, the Wallace disc raised over $1,100 for Roo's pet charity, Animal Farm Foundation.

I watched the Purina event on ESPN and cheered from my armchair for Wallace and Roo. As a responsible PIt Bull owner myself, I can't praise these two competitors enough. They help showcase all that is good about the breed when raised responsibly and lovingly. I couldn't have been happier when the final score was shown on TV and Wallace and Roo won. Fantastic! Thanks for writing about it too!

Hurrah to the Purina judges for displaying objectivity and awarding 1st prize to the most deserving dog. Pit bulls are so maligned these days that I was almost certain their BadRap would taint the judging. I'm very glad I was wrong. Thank you, judges! And thanks to Roo and Wallace for showcasing a fantastic breed-- and a RESCUED dog!! [Wallace's new and imrpoved site-- for all his fans-- is: www.wallacethepitbull.ning.com]
