This Sunday, December 13th, Cindy Adams, the New York Post's esteemed doyenne of celebrity gossip, has teamed with her favorite animal-welfare organization, the ASPCA, to coordinate a holiday event honoring New York City's dogs.

The event is a Blessing of the Animals at Christ Church, 520 Park Avenue at 60th Street. The non-sectarian service starts at 6 p.m. and is open to animal lovers of all ages and their pets - dogs as well as other species - provided they are in a dog carrier or on a leash; everyone is encouraged to arrive early, as the event is "first come, first served."

On hand and paw - and hoof - will be the city's brave police horses and K9s, plus Adams's own Yorkshire Terriers, Jazzy and Juicy, whom she affectionately dubs "New Yorkies."

"The love and companionship of a pet is a gift that keeps giving all year," Adams says "In the spirit of the holiday season, I'm delighted to host and participate in a service that commemorates the relationship between New Yorkers and their animal companions." She also believes that New York City should have an Animal Commissioner, which sounds like a fine idea.

Christ Church is a United Methodist house of worship; whereas most Christian traditions celebrate animal blessings on or around the birthday of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals, Methodist tradition celebrates the animals who were present in the manger at the birth of Christ.

"At the Christmas season, we remind ourselves that animals are part of God's plan, too," says Rev. William S. Shillady of Park Avenue Methodist Church (106 East 86th Street), which will host its Blessing of the Animals on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
