Canine Campaigners

Voter apathy is out of the question for at least one constituency: the virtual canine contingent Puppies 4 Obama, which aims to harness "Puppy Power" on behalf of its pet politico by urging visitors to nominate candidates (or is that canid-ates?) for "2007 Obama Dog."

The brainchild of Anthony Thomalla of Indiana, the site went live November 1st in response to a previous posting on Ann Coulter's site that went, in part, "I can't wait for Obama's inaugural address when he reveals that he loves long walks in the rain, sunsets, and fresh-baked cookies shaped like puppies."

Although Obama does not own a dog (incidentally, neither does Coulter), the Senator's young daughters - like kids everywhere, regardless of their parents' political persuasion - seem to think that wouldn't be a bad idea. Speaking at a televised roundtable, Obama's wife Michelle described how the couple's daughters are running a tireless campaign of their own: to get a family dog

If you want a friend in Washington, the old saw goes, get a dog; thus spake Harry Truman. The young Obamas demonstrate political astuteness - not to mention a precocious awareness of presidential pet history - well beyond their years.
