An update on Louisiana's dogs in the aftermath of Hurricane Gustav

Posted on Sep 15, 2008 By Julia Szabo
The aftermath of Hurricane Gustav left good news and bad for the dogs of Louisiana. First, the good news: FetchDog friends Amanda and Martin St. John of MuttShack Animal Rescue Foundation, which heroically saved some 3,000 animals during Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma, arrived in New Orleans days before Gustav struck.

The St. Johns were in town to accept a "Pioneer Spirit" award from the Humane Society of Louisiana at the unveiling of the National Katrina Animal Memorial. The couple were ready for Gustav, having spearheaded, in 2007, a project to make temperature-controlled trucks ready to evacuate pets and owners in the event of the next natural disaster. MuttShack quickly went into full deployment mode, evacuating pets and owners from 13 coastal parishes to Shreveport, where the animals and their people were housed in shelters right next to each other.

The sad news is that not all dogs had owners who wouldn't abandon them, which left many dogs homeless and wandering the streets of New Orleans. Author and FetchDog friend Ken Foster reports that he has managed to rescue several dogs under the auspices of his not-for-profit Sula Foundation. Now, the dogs Ken found are in need of permanent homes; email sulafoundation@gmail.com for information.

Even sadder is the fact that shelters such as the Humane Society Louisiana, which have been overburdened ever since Hurricane Katrina struck nearly three years ago, are once again operating at beyond maximum capacity. For those who are looking to add a dog to the family, those on the front lines of disaster response ask that your first stop be your local animal shelter; with many no-kill shelters, including North Shore Animal League America, lending a hand to coordinate transport efforts, adopting locally frees up space so that those shelters can offer temporary safe haven to more of Louisiana's many homeless dogs.
