In a significant victory for opponents of breed-specific legislation, the Associated Press reports that the Dutch government promises to lift a 15-year ban on Pit Bulls because the ban did not result in a decrease in dog bite incidents.

The decision is based on the advice of a commission of experts appointed to review the policy.

The country had banned the breeding and possession of Pit Bulls in 1993 but expects to have a new policy in place by the end of this year, in which dogs that have displayed aggression will be tested by an expert.

Instead of enforcing breed-specific legislation, the Netherlands will focus on enforcing local leash laws and owner education programs.
