The newly-appointed director of pet relations at the Vero Beach Hotel & Spa, part of the Kimpton chain of luxury hotels, is proud of his humble beginnings.  His name is Oliver, a 17 pound Lhasa Apso, and he was once an orphan at a Miami animal shelter, where he was spotted by the non-profit Have a Heart for Companion Animals.

Despite his clear-cut cuteness, it was Oliver's connections that landed him the job.  He was recently adopted by the hotel's general manager, Marco Scherer, and that's what gave Oliver the edge.  "We had many qualified canine-dates apply for this job through our Facebook page, however, after an exhaustive interview process, we determined Oliver's friendly spirit and outgoing attitude made him the perfect pet for the position," Scherer said.

In addition to his other responsibilities - which include developing amenities, promotions, and packages for four-legged travelers; selecting his favorite treats to surprise furry friends with upon arrival; shaking paws with hotel guests - Oliver co-hosts the hotel's complimentary wine hour every evening in the lobby from 5 to 6 p.m.
