Actor Jeffrey Dean "I'm a foster failure" Morgan

Posted on Feb 1, 2008 By Julia Szabo comments Comments (3)

Fans of Grey's Anatomy are familiar with the phenomenon known as Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who caused nationwide swooning when he appeared as Katherine Heigl's doomed love, heartthrob heart-transplant patient Denny Duquette.

Now appearing in P.S. I Love You opposite Hilary Swank, Morgan is soon to co-star with Uma Thurman in The Accidental Husband, a contemporary screwball comedy due out next month.

He's acted with some of the screen's most luminous leading ladies, but the main girl in Morgan's life has four legs: she's a 9-year-old Rottweiler mix named Bisou, French slang for kiss. "She's pretty awesome," Morgan says of the dog he rescued as a 2-day-old pup.

"I was walking on the boardwalk in Venice, California, and these kids were selling puppies in a cardboard box," he says. "The dogs were way too young to be away from their mom, and there was this little runt, maybe four inches long, so I took her home and bottle-fed her for a month. She got her name because she couldn't open her eyes and kind of kissed her way around."

At the time, Morgan tells FetchDog, "I had another dog, a golden retriever-chow mix – the sweetest dog in the world. He was in his golden years, and not in the mood to have a puppy all over him, so I figured I would just foster Bisou. But in the end, it worked out great. I still haven't found her a home," he says with a laugh.

That makes Morgan a "foster failure" – something he's quite proud of. Here's something else he takes pride in: Bisou is spayed. "Spaying and neutering is so important," Morgan says. "I mean, what does it take for people to figure this stuff out? There's too many dogs and puppy mills out there."

The pup who fit in the palm of Morgan's hand grew up to be a healthy 60 pounds. Morgan loves to cook, and he and his girl share steak "at least once a week – she likes it medium rare, just like her Dad." (She also likes peanut butter, as the photo reveals.) Bisou also accompanies her favorite actor to work. "She's become quite accustomed to being on sets," Morgan says. "She's got me under her paw, so to speak."

Watch for Bisou's cameo in The Accidental Husband. "We were shooting, and I had her off-leash," Morgan says. "She came running up behind me like a crazy dog in the middle of a soccer game." Bisou's bit of improvisation wasn't lost on dog lover Griffin Dunne, the movie's director, who kept it in.

What a wonderful tale! I have to admit that I only noticed Mr. Morgan when he was on Supernatural (and I'm still upset that they killed John off!), but found myself drawn to that voice!! Now, to hear about his rescue of Bisou and how much she is a part of his live... well, I think I love him!!! What a wonderful thing, to give her such a great life. And he's right, spaying and neutering is so important. So see poor, half-starved and filthy dogs (and cats) roaming the streets or, worse, dead at the side of the road, is such a strong indicator that we need to do something to change the way our four legged citizens are treated! I and my family have rescued many animals over the years, and we've found nothing but unconditional love in doing so. Bravo, Mr. Morgan. Bravo!

He's just too cute.. A foster failure- I'm one of those too, I was supposed to transport a Sheltie to LI Rescue, 8 years later he's still here. Jeff seems so sincere when he's interviewed, his actions with Bisou prove that it's not just for show.

I too have rescued my dog, Darby. She's a Belgian Malinois and the sweetes girl in the world. I'm also glad to see that M.r Morgan advocates spaying/neutering his furry "kids" I cannot imagine life without a dog! I'm glad Mr. Morgan and Bisou are such a good match. Yes, I'm also a fan and have known about his acting ability for a long time, way before he was on Grey's or Supernatural. Keep up the good work!
